William Makepeace Thackeray

William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was known for his satirical attitude toward upward mobility in Victorian society. He displays this most prominently in his masterpiece, Vanity Fair, which appeared in monthly parts at the same time as Dickens' Dombey and Son.
